How a payment moves

The key steps from initiation to settlement.

1Initiate Payment

Customer pays (card/UPI/wallet) at the merchant.

2Process & Secure

Gateway captures, secures and routes the request.

3Authorise

Banks and network validate and approve the transaction.

4Complete & Settle

Payment is confirmed and merchant funds are settled (T+0 to T+2, typically).

The economics behind every transaction

How a typical card payment of ₹10,000 is split across the ecosystem (illustrative, MDR = 2.0%).

Transaction Amount₹10,000
MDR (2.0%)₹200
♧  Issuer Interchange~1.30%₹130
◇  Network Fees~0.10%₹10
♜  Acquirer (Bank)~0.40%₹40
▱  Gateway / PA~0.20%₹20
Total (MDR)2.00%₹200

Illustrative model only. Actual MDR, interchange, network fees and provider economics vary by card type, merchant category, acquiring arrangement, volume, risk profile and commercial contract. The gateway / PA component is not necessarily a separately itemised share in every arrangement.

Who pays for the rate?

Rate subvention is a commercial arrangement where the cost of acceptance (MDR) is partly or fully funded by a third party such as a brand, bank or platform.

MerchantPays a lower or zero MDR

Brand / PlatformSubsidises part of the cost (e.g. 0.5–1.0%)

The payer split is contract-specific. Funding can be fixed, percentage-based, capped, campaign-linked or conditional on transaction performance.

Know the code behind the transaction

MCC (Merchant Category Code) is a 4-digit code that classifies a merchant's business type and is used for routing, risk, interchange and incentives.

Examples shown are common MCC associations; the assigned MCC depends on the merchant's actual business activity and acquirer classification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Payment Gateway and a Payment Aggregator?

A Payment Gateway (PG) is the technological layer that securely captures, encrypts, and routes transaction data. A Payment Aggregator (PA) is an RBI-authorized entity that boards merchants, pools transaction funds in an escrow account, and completes merchant settlements.

How does MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) work?

MDR is the fee charged to a merchant for accepting digital payments. It is typically split among the card issuer bank (interchange fee), card network (switch fee), acquiring bank, and payment aggregator or gateway.

What is Rate Subvention in merchant pricing?

Rate Subvention is a commercial arrangement where the cost of payment acceptance (MDR or EMI interest) is partly or fully sponsored by a third-party brand, platform, or financial partner rather than the merchant alone.
